Domestic Violence Awareness Month History:

The first Domestic Violence Awareness month was 1987. In 1989 the U.S. Congress officially designating October  as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Day of Unity:

Each year, the Day of Unity is celebrated the first Monday of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The 2011Day of Unity is Monday, October 3rd.

2010 Domestic Violence Awareness Month Community Events:

Domestic violence awareness month is a great oppourtnity to learn more about how you can end domestic violence.  Support domestic violence awareness month and participate in events in your area!

  • Reviving Ophelia. In “Reviving Ophelia,” sisters Marie (Jane Kaczmarek) and Le Ann (Kim Dickens) have always leaned on one another through life’s challenges, but discover they need each other more than ever as they navigate the complexities of understanding and raising their teen daughters. Marie’s 17-year-old Elizabeth (Rebecca Williams) has the picture-perfect life, with a seemingly equally wonderful boyfriend. Meanwhile, Le Ann is raising 16-year-old Kelli (Carleigh Beverly) as a single parent and finds it difficult to relate to the pressures her daughter is facing with boys, friends and school. When Kelli starts to suspect Elizabeth may be abused by her boyfriend (Nick Thurston), no one will believe her.   • Telling Amy’s Story. This year, CPEDV is proud to partner with the Verizon Foundation to promote the “Telling Amy’s Story” documentary. Narrated by actress and advocate Mariska Hargitay, this 60-minute. Documentary depicts the timeline and events surrounding a domestic violence homicide and serves as a spark for community forums Click Here For Telling Amy’s Story.

  • Sin By Silence Movie Screenings. On-line screenings of another documentary: “Sin By Silence” which examines the stories of women incarcerated for killing abusive husbands. Join together with CPEDV staff and other California advocates for live, web-cam discussions on October 5th (7:00 pm – Pacific Time), October 9th (2:00 pm – Pacific Time), and October 12th (12:00 pm – Pacific Time).   • Binational Health Week-Health Fair
    Date: 10/05/2010
    Time: 9:00 am – 1:00pm

Description: The Center foThe Center for Employment Training will hold a health fair where a Domestic Violence resource table will be set up at 294 S. Third St. in El Centro, CA. As part of the fair, an hour long workshop on Domestic Violence Basics will be provided. This is an annual collaborative event.
